Nine-year-old children are really starting to come into their own. If you look at the basics of child development in nine-year-olds there are several generalizations of typical behaviors accessible through growth patterns, in the classroom behavior and curriculum they are following. At this age children start to have a better understanding of the world around them and enjoy learning about social issues. They worry about world events, health of loved ones and their social relationships with peers. Fourth grade is the first year of intermediate level, at this level children may start standardized benchmark testing. Tests at this age may be devastating as nine-year-olds can experience problematic anxiety causing a known decline in test scores. Physical changes begin to occur causing children to complain of their aches and pains or hurt feelings. It’s important for Education Assistants to understand that developmental milestones act as checkpoints in a child’s development to determine what the average child can do at each age.
