Italy experienced a major earthquake on August 24, 2016. The earthquake hit at 3:36 AM, 10 kilometers southeast of Norcia. It had a magnitude of 6.2. The earthquake happened 6 miles under the surface of the earth. This was particularly shallow, and therefore a destructive earthquake which killed at least 281 people. There are currently more than 2000 people living in camps and more than 4000 tents have been set up for the homeless people that survived.
