Oodgeroo Noonuccal is a well-known poet that wrote poems that relates to the Aborigines’ dispossession. She increasingly got engaged in political activities that was for the support of the Aborigines and social justice during 1960. With this, she was able to contribute largely in the national organisation, the Federal Council for the Advancement of Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders (FCAATSI) who had a massive role that is for the voting rights in the society. In one of her poems, We are Going, exhibits an effective message of the Aborigines’ loss in culture, their identity and their possession in power. She uses many of her own experiences and memories to publicise her envision of a better generation.
The poem We are Going written by Oodgeroo Noonuccal is a didactic poem that is denied by many poets and was thought more of a propaganda than a poem. Even some of the most experienced critics described her poem as technically imperfect although the poem had an effective message. Thus, many poets recognised this poem as either a really bad poem or a good complaint material. Oodgeroo herself was not disturbed by these disapproval, calling herself as a more of a teacher to the society than being a poet. While some parts of the poem mourns the loss of their culture, their identity and their loss of their past memories, the poem also affirms the continuity of Aboriginality. The phrase ‘we are going’ is both the title and the last line of the poem. In each occurrence, there represent a different meaning. In the title, it hints the assemblage of the Aborigines, in the last line it suggests a strong despair. In each case it is a message to the reader of dispossessed people’s cries, and a rallying cry from those who are mobilising and becoming politically active, as the very existence of the poem itself also
