War Horse Evaluation
On the 11th of March 2013 I went to see War Horse at the New London Theatre. War Horse is a novel adapted by Nick Stafford and written by Michael Morpurgo. The performance I saw was directed by Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris, it also involved the incredible Handspring Puppet Company who created all the animals. War Horse is set in Devon in 1914 and is about how a farmer, Ted Narracott who is played by Jamie Kenna buys a thoroughbred horse rather than a plough animal, but when his teenage son Albert played by Siôn Daniel Young trains the horse and calls him Joey, the two becoming inseparable. When his harvest fails, Ted has to sell Joey to the British cavalry and he is shipped to France where, after a disastrous

Another effective scene was earlier in the play in Act One when the war started; it began with a parade centre stage, the lighting was warm and bright and the stage was buzzing with people conversing and shouting just like at a parade. Seconds later the jubilant atmosphere was overshadowed by a more serious scene downstage and it was scary and eerie as icy cold white lights were used to show the audience how tense everything was. Cross cutting was used here to highlight the themes of the play and to contrast between centre stage and down stage. At centre stage the surroundings were jubilant, there was a band playing and it was loud and happy. Whereas downstage it was stressful and shocking as Joey was being sold to the cavalry. Cross cutting was used effectively as it created a juxtapose effect where two very different atmospheres were happening together at the same time. Also this scene was marking the moment as it was like a flashpoint being mysterious and tense. The rotating stage was used with a still image; in this still image were all the main characters including the horses and the thoughts behind the image were to show the beginning of war and how they thought that it would only last for a short period of time. This was effective because it reminded me how serious everything was. Also it was ironic
