Zone of Proximal Development and imaginative play are very important to enrich children’s language development. Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) theory refers to the production of educators facilitate learner’s to achieve the task that beyond their capacity (Vygotsky, 1978). Children’s current language development level revealed the matured functions, with a more capable peer’s guidance, children can mature other functions that they are unable to do by themselves so that they can arrive at the next level (Vygotsky, 1978). David’s mother introduced the words “lady” to David so that he was exposed to the new word and new contexts during this daily conversation. With mother’s introduction, David’s literacy was enhanced as he could only use “girls” to describe all females in the past but now he learned the word “lady”. Moreover, children are enable to practice their prior knowledge and broaden their understanding of the world through imaginative play (Ewing, 2012). Imaginative play can be found in Nadia’s interaction with Catherine. In the imaginative play, Nadia imagined a lady flying to Queensland with the Lego and she invited Catherine to join in the imaginative play. Imaginative play allowed Nadia to create characters such as the lady in the helicopter, and her thinking was expanded as she created the scene that the lady was visiting Queensland.
