Language development is one of the key factors for a child’s healthy cognitive and even physical development as it involves muscles of the face and mouth, requiring them to work simultaneously, ears training to hear and recognize sounds and speech flow and cognition for comprehension and communication. Behaviorist theory suggests that a parent reinforces language when they praise their child for annunciating words like da-da or ma-ma. Although the child begins saying its first words, often comprehension is not yet developed. However with continued reinforcement, concepts of words begin to take shape and the child can imitate what he or she hears and even begin to understand the meaning of words just from the context. Nativist theory proposes that a language acquisition device is used to recognize the pentameter and flow of speech which helps a child discern sounds and syllables regardless of language, rather gaining a universal auditory understanding of language that eventually leads to comprehension and communication. I like how Piaget designed his theory in stages as opposed to steps or spheres because it gives room for exploration as well as a standard idea with general checkpoints for healthy development. I find it interesting that Piaget’s biologic science gave him additional insight into how the brain in its physical sense is forming as well as the morality and academic capacity for children. Piaget’s theory also helps teachers, psychologists and therapists, all very different realms of study, have a universal means of looking at children while still being able to hone in on individual variances and provide scaffolding and find how to stay within the child’s zone of proximal
