Erikson defines identity as “a coherent conception of the self. Made up of goals, values, and beliefs to which a person is solidly committed” (Papalia & Martorell, 2015, pg. 337). This happens during the teenage years, this is a time spent discovering the self (Papalia & Martorell, 2015). It is during this time that an individual begins Erikson’s fifth stage of psychosocial development, identity versus identity confusion, if the individual is successful in experiencing this stage they develop the virtue of fidelity (Papalia & Martorell, 2015). This adolescence stage starts around 12 years old and ends around 18 years old (Papalia & Martorell, 2015).…
Michael’s Developmental Identity Michael, although he has cerebral palsy, up until recent has never considered himself disabled. This is in large part due to his family. Growing up it appears his parents instilled into Michael that he was just like everyone else. While Michael’s parents most likely did what they felt was best, they unintentionally engrained in Michael that he should not acknowledge his disability. Michael’s parents seemed to avoid the topic of his disability and by not recognizing it Michael was never fully able to come to terms with it and accept himself fully.…
The Problem I Want to Solve For the most part, the problem I want to solve has remained the same throughout the weeks. I am eager to manage and ultimately own a business in the interior decorating field. I aim for my business to inspire others with our decor and style. I want my employees to be able to create a beautiful space with whatever they are given, and I want my clients to be so happy with the results and make their house a place they are happy to call home.…
My identity was formed through the experiences I went through growing up. According to Erik Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development people go through many experiences that can attribute to their personal identity. Growing up there have been many emotional and psychological experiences that have shaped who I am. The first stage in Erikson’s psychosocial theory is trust versus mistrust. This stage takes place around the age of infancy to 1.5 years old.…
This theory has multiple parts to it, which conform significantly to Australia’s life. This theory is held by Susan Whitbourne and Stacey Whitbourne (2017), who use this theory is many of their textbooks. This theory is generated by Piaget’s cognitive development theory and Erikson’s theory of identity development (Sneed and Whitbourne, 2003). The theory discusses how age-related changes can affect one identity (Sneed and Whitbourne, 2003). These age-related changes to identity break into three parts, identity assimilation, identity accommodation, and identity balance.…

Children from immigrant families unlike children who are natives of a country have a much more difficult time navigating the process known as identity formation in adolescence. My identity development was shaped by life experiences especially in college. After reading through Helm’s White Racial Identity Development Model, I realized that I have been in this stage since I went to college. After being immersed with so many diverse people, I recognized that I want to be more of an activist and confront my own biases that I grew up…
Erikson’s describe this stage as a person who is childhood security and adult autonomy (Mendez, 2018 Chapter 10.1). The stage has one main characteristic in a person’s life, which is an identity crisis. Identity crisis is not bad as it sounds, so it generally refers to when an adolescent is exploring many different paths for a career. When a person is in an identity crisis there are categories in identity which are Identity Diffusion (where a person has made no effort to explore their options), Identity Foreclosure (where a person decides what they want to do but has no experiences), Identity Moratorium (where a person gains experience on different path but has not yet committed to one), and Identity Achievement (where a person has gain experiences and has committed to a career path). To put it in perspective, in my identity crisis I fall under the Identity Foreclosure because I decide that I want to major in chemistry and work in a crime lab, but I no experiences in both chemistry and in a crime lab.…
The stage that I am currently experiencing is Erikson’s fifth stage identity Vs. Role Confusion from age 13 to 19. In this stage, we have a better understanding of where we are heading in life. We also have a better understanding of what kind of person we are. There many ways I can relate this stage to my life right now, on how many events that already happened and passed.…
