Visual Suzuki Observation

Nice observations in your post this week! I felt that Malico did an excellent job in describing the experience in such a way that it engages the reader. They can see it in their mind; and the sensory descriptions she used were enough so that a person could imagine the sensations of them. The article made me wonder what it would be like to take a punch with hundreds of people watching. Boxers fight for sport, but not for survival. The only experiences I have had personally were for survival in a street environment. Her article did make me imagine what it would be like to fight for sport; including safety equipment, judges, and multiple spectators. I agree with your analysis of the visual Suzuki advertisement; I came to a similar conclusion

I really liked how vivid Black Hawk was able to describe the injustices felt by his people. I enjoyed that you mentioned Black Hawk and everyone in the village never were aggressive towards the Americans. Despite the the violence and relocation of Native Americans, the villagers responded peacefully to whites, who were abusing their women, taking their land, and killing their men. It felt really tragic to read about Black Hawk and the pain of the Native Americans, because it was so clear that many of them were striving to co-exist within their own lands. I definitely think you are right!…

Stack sets up Every Man in this Village is a Liar in a sequential and methodical way. The chapters are based on themes, with each chapter focusing on a different country she reported from and her personal interactions and descriptions of her time in them. Despite the sequential setup of the memoir, it still comes off as bouncing from country to country and interaction to interaction. Stack could have included more information between her different narratives rather than jumping between stories. This could have improved how the memoir read, but it still is put together successfully.…

In times of war, the masculine epitome was provided the soldier figure. However in a post-war context, this stable image of masculinity became blurred. The struggle to mentally pinpoint and physically embody an ideal form of masculinity befitting the era is epitomised in Storey and Sillitoe’s protagonists. The multiplicity of male social roles and uncertainty in claiming a specifically male physical space results in embattled narratives of tension and flux. In extension of the developments of the modernist novel, conflicts are most explored in interior monologues, where men appear at their most bitter, defiant and solipsistic.…
