The majority of the time when there is an offensive advertisement it is targeted to women. Sometimes advertisements try to alter the beliefs of women by making them believe that they are supposed to look a certain way. Thousands of young girls around the world have looked at advertisements with skinny beautiful women and wondered “why don’t I look like her?”
Victoria Secret is a well-known brand amongst a lot of young women. It is nationally known for their “angels.” The “angels” are a group of woman who are beautiful and super skinny. In the Dove campaign, there is 11 women in underwear just as the Victoria Secret Angels, but the Dove models are of all different body shapes and sizes. Dove created the campaign to show woman you don’t have to be skinny and tall to be considered beautiful or to be considered as having a perfect body. On October 30th in 2014 dove tweeted "Today we celebrate the perfect REAL body and all the women who have said "#IAmPerfect the way I am." Their “diss” campaign to Victoria Secret; a “diss” is to talk negatively about something or someone. The reason for Dove “diss” to Victoria Secret was to show women it is okay to love their curves and be beautiful in their skin. Due to all of the controversy regarding the slogan Victoria Secret privately changed the name of the campaign to “A Body for Every ‘Body '”. “Bowing to pressure, Victoria’s Secret quietly changed the wording but kept the same models – some with visible rib cages.” ( …show more content…
This is one of the reasons why they are so well known. When you have such beautiful models such as the ones I mentioned this will influence people to want what they are endorsing. Also, when you have models such as the ones broadcasted in the campaign, it could possibly attract new people to their brand. If one of your favorite models is in a fashion show with a fashion brand that you never heard of, that’s going to lead you to look up the company and potentially buy something from them. Since Victoria Secret is associated with beautiful woman, some people feel as though if you wear Victoria Secret you’re beautiful too, this helps sells their product. Liz Dwyer of said “advertisements aimed at making them feel insecure about their bodies, in the hope that they will spend money on products that will supposedly make them happier and more beautiful.”
