Veterinarian And Client: Appropriate Communication Case Study

Improved Essays
Veterinarian and Client: Appropriate Communication A study was undergone in which 6 pet owners and 4 veterinarians were evaluated via open-ended questions (Coe et al., 2008). The purpose was to compare both vets and clients view of appropriate communication between the two (Coe et al., 2008). The study concluded in similar responses inappropriate communication from both the veterinarians and the clients, also suggesting that “breakdowns” in communication can result in negative effects on their relationship (Coe et al., 2008).
Adams and Frankel (2007) suggested that appropriate communication skills are reminders why current and aspiring veterinarians have chosen to go into the field, to begin with. As well as that it is beneficial to both the client and the vet. The veterinarian will be less stressed when communicating both good and bad news to the client, and the client will feel well-informed and trustful that their pet is in good hands (Adams and Frankel, 2007).

I worked in the biology lab labeling pelts, bones, and animal specimens; by twenty-one, I obtained my bachelor’s degree and strived for my first job out of university. That summer, I joined Humane Society Naples and worked as a veterinary assistant, while also volunteering at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida in wildlife rehabilitation. This is my turning point and reminds me of Claudia at age seven, who wanted to save animals. The most vivid and unforgettable part of my time there was seeing the transformation of the animal’s health and behavior. From the time, they come into the shelter, scared and sometimes in pain, to then being apart of the team to medically assess and treat them, to witness their ability to play with other animals, and then to the joys of adopters coming in looking for their forever pet, is…

A regular day for a small animal vet consists of working in a small private practice spaying and neutering, treating wounds, diagnosing diseases, setting broken bones, and prescribing medication. Large animal vets spend more time travelling to their patients to diagnose and treat illness and disease that pertain only to livestock. Commonly treated animals are cattle, horses, sheep, goats, and pigs. Other common responsibilities of a large animal vet is to assist with problem births, artificial inseminations, vaccinate and draw blood, take ultrasounds and x-rays, and perform…

Based on the reviews on her website, McGee seems to be able to connect with the pets and their owners. Lastly, McGee also discussed how rewarding pet photography…

There are positive and negative aspects to being an animal shelter veterinarian. The most difficult part of being an animal shelter veterinarian is dealing with the behavioral problems of the shelter animals. “Animal Behavior for Shelter Veterinarians and Staff” supports my view that animal shelter veterinarians are required to deal with serious animal aggression and trauma. Shelter animals tend to have more behavioral problems than animals brought into a regular veterinary clinic. It is absolutely necessary to socialize with animals and read their body language in order to be the most successful shelter veterinarian possible.…

DISCUSSION In cases of alleged veterinary malpractice, the standard applied to veterinarians is generally the same standard applied to physicians and surgeons in medical malpractice actions. In order to prove veterinary malpractice, a plaintiff must show (1) a duty to perform according to the appropriate veterinary standards; (2) that the veterinarian breached that duty by deviating from the appropriate veterinary standard; (3) that the plaintiff suffered damages; and (4) that the breach was the proximate cause of the damages. In addition, as with medical malpractice claims, expert testimony is required to establish the appropriate standard of care, the ways in which the veterinarian deviated from it, as well as causation, unless such conduct…

The doctor and patient should be viewed as partners in health with communication being the vehicle in which a common ground can be reached.
