Van Gogh's Starry Night

The image I analyzed was one of Van Gogh’s most famous, “Starry Night” This painting was created in 1889. The image itself is an oil painting, and is currently located at the Museum of Modern art in New York City. This is image is the view from Van Gogh’s room at an asylum he put himself into and was painted from memory afterwards. At first glance this image automatically creates a sense of calmness. With its dark warm colors and the seemingly flowing lines that create the image itself. This sense of flowing and calmness make for a very welcoming picture. Van Gogh, in my opinion, is really good at portraying these feelings of calmness. In some of his other paintings about nature, he really captures the serenity of it all. For a very depressed …show more content…
The picture mostly contains dark shades of blue and some black. The color blue is mostly associated with the feeling of calmness; calmness of the mind and body. The sky and the mountains are all different shades of blue, you can really feel the peacefulness of the night depicted. The color yellow and gold also plays a significant role in this picture. It emphasizes the moon and the stars and makes them the first thing your eyes go to. It makes them pop out at you, but not so much so as where you are distracted from the rest of the image. The balance of blue and yellow really help complement each other when it comes to viewing the image. Finally a very dark green, almost black, color is used for the tree that fills up most of the image. The use of this dark shade really helps set up a very big eerie figure that looks as if though its towering over the small …show more content…
In dreams nothing is ever visually clear. Everything is either distorted or doesn’t have a definable shape at all. In this image everything is distorted with the use of wavy lines. Also depending on the dream itself, it can be a very peaceful time. I personally like to think of this image as a dark calm dream you would have. Not a nightmare, but a dream in which you are just an observer gently floating around in the dream world. But there is another dark tone this image has. With the presence of the dark image to the left, it definitely feels like this image is representing a nightmare like state. This is a very powerful image in my opinion. Van Gogh painted this in an asylum, he was disconnected from the outside world while he recovered. In this image you can sense his loneliness and seclusion that he felt in those times. It shows a distant town with giant mountains in the background. It almost seems like its an observer looking out onto civilization alone in the night. Van Gogh was very depressed at the time of this painting, you can feel this within the dark tone the image gives off. The sky also takes up most of the image, as if he was looking to the stars for something. Maybe the depiction of the sky emphasizes his loneliness. The universe is a massive endless place, and we sit alone on our little rock with no idea if we

The various shades of blue establish a peaceful, yet isolated mood as the blue implies that the image was captured on an early cloudy morning. The piece is composed to appear as if the viewer is gazing across a choppy body of water upon a landmass covered with lush trees. These trees contain dark shades of blue, however they also accommodate several splashes of green that enrich and highlight the tree line. Behind the trees, there is a void, filled with a light tint of blue and white, implying a cloudy sky along with several other blue and green landmasses faded into the…

On the other half, there is lighter tints of green, as well as light blues and whites that encompass the sky and clouds. This symbolizes that the land is in the hands of humans, and it gives the feeling of calm and happiness. Even the river is light blue, which may show that it too, is now being used by the humans. Even there are different shades of green, the repetition of the color itself helps to give the piece unity, just with different…

In this exceedingly powerful painting, “Figures in a Landscape” painted in 1972 by Sidney Goodman, a child, woman, and man are in what looks to be a park because of the sandbox and blue and red swing set. In the background the mountains are bright and happy with houses surrounded by many tall green trees. On the right side of the painting is a huge dark gloomy cloud like when a murder is about to occur in a horror movie. The figures look like something is going on in their mind, maybe they are unhappy with each other or something is really upsetting them. When I see this painting I feel as if the figures are in there own world not aware of their surroundings.…

The dark rich green color that was used in the leaves, grass, and trees in the jungle show the symbolism of nature, a land that is free of people and filled with life. It can also be seen monkeys hanhing from the trees picking up oranges, showing the cycle of nature the natural habitat of animals and the healthy food earth mother nature provides. The painting shows a woman sitting in front of a window with landscape in the background that was blurry and shadowy to look at. She had a famous facial expression of a smile but not quite a smile. It makes you wonder what she was thinking or feeling or what she was waiting to reveal while posing for this painting. There is a unique and mysterious way about the painting. I think the painter had a crush on her, and in order to be perfect, he took many years to finish this painting.…

The Scream, Edvard Munch, 1893, Oil Painting, 35.75" X 29", Figure 11.28 The narrative depicted in this piece is one of hysteria, and paranoia. The scene is set on the edge of some type of wooden pier, or bridge, that stands over some body of water. The perspective from which the viewer sees seems slightly elevated above the focus of the painting, as if we are meant to look ever so slightly down at the moment taking place in the image. We only see a small portion of the wooden construct.…

The reason being is that the smallest spiral could represent the sun since it seems to be more vibrant than the rest of the spirals. The blue background complements the other spirals making it seem as if the spirals were laying on an ocean of some sort. Additionally, since the spirals are the main focus in the picture, they could represent progress or growth since the spirals start off small and continuously unwinds, making it seem as if they are getting bigger. All in all, the artwork sets a positive mood since there are no colors that are too grim and it is generally bright. The texture is also smooth since it was made out of glass, with bumps only on the lines that segmented the spirals.…

Van Gogh uses color in a very deliberate and effective way in The Night Café. He selects the colors not based on his visual interpretation of the room but on the psychological and emotional effects it has on its occupants. He explains to his brother Theo, in a letter, that he uses the red and green in an attempt to express the terrible passions of human nature. The use of these colors helps to illustrate the intensity of the Café de la Gare and provoke the emotions of the viewer who may relate the bar scene to alcoholism or depression. He also balances the wooden browns and yellows of the lower half of the painting with a dark wooden clock adorned with a vibrant yellow face at the top of the painting.…
