Social work is synonymous with values and ethics. The role of a social work professional divided between two levels of service. The macro level, which strives to create an ideal environment for individuals, and the micro level, that attempts to help individuals in their environment (Van Wormer & Besthorn, 2013). The values and ethics of social work professionals create the framework of the field of social work and it is imperative that the upmost standard is held by this profession. Early ventures of this idea were evident in England in 1601 when Queen Elizabeth established the “English Poor Laws” which gave local governments the right to raise taxes in order to support the elderly, handicapped and “worthy poor” which meant those who were widowed or orphaned (Hansen, 2011). Similarly in the social work profession in the United States marks its beginnings during the late 1800s with historical icons such as Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Star (National Association of Social Workers, 2016). These notable social work pioneers cooperatively formed Hull House in Chicago where they aided in providing social services to those in need, predominately the large immigrant population living in Chicago at the time (National Association of Social Workers, 2016).
