Using The SIOP Model For English Language Learners

Teachers have access to endless amounts of resources to assist them with all different aspects of teaching, such as classroom management, different teaching approaches, and curriculum. A crucial piece of teaching that can positively impact all students, and particularly English Language Learners (ELL), is using model programs that help make lessons more applicable to ELL students. One example of a model program that has shown success is the AppleTree Institute for Education Innovation’s creation of the Every Child Ready model. Excelling teachers understand that their learning never stops, even after it feels like they have mastered the art of teaching. One of the most efficient ways to expand knowledge, learn about new strategies and concepts, and further master teaching, is to attend professional development trainings. Professional development holds a significant amount of potential of teaching current and future teachers all about different aspects of the profession. Professional development may hold seminars that cover topics such as special education, gifted education, ELL students, and more. Sometimes teachers may feel as if they are not knowledgeable enough about a certain topic as they would like to be. The best step for those teachers to take would be to attend a professional development training that discusses those topics, along with topics that they may feel like they have mastered, because the learning never stops for …show more content…
ELLs go through school that requires them to learn new concepts in a language that they have not become proficient in, and frequently, they are not yet proficient in their home language either. With the uniqueness of the situations that ELL students are in, teachers need to be as educated as they can be on teaching their ELL students. Professional development sessions will help with learning new teaching strategies, accommodations, and setting goals for students. “While supporting access to content, teachers of ELLs are called upon to accelerate English language development and literacy and, in bilingual classrooms, native language and literacy development. Thus, teachers need to know how to create classrooms that are supportive of using and learning language. Such classrooms benefit all students and are essential for ELLs” (Santos, Darling-Hammond, & Cheuk, n.d.). In my current fieldwork experience and to the best of my knowledge, there are no ELLs students attending any of the classes that I currently observe. Teachers learn how to integrate students and use specific content and instruction to address the students.
