Aristotle once said, “Persuasion is clearly a sort of demonstration, since we are most fully persuaded when we consider a thing to have been demonstrated” (“Aristotle’s Three”, n.d., para. 1). This statement highlights a crucial truth regarding the use of rhetorical strategies in that logos, ethos, and pathos demonstrate the validity of an argument that completely persuades the reader. Specifically, the Center for Disease Control’s (CDC) Web page on Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) exhibits all of the strategies of logos, ethos, and pathos. The page describes the disorder as “one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders of childhood”, lists potential signs and symptoms, explains possible causes, and instructs one on how to diagnose and treat ADHD (“Attention-Deficit”, 2016, para. 1). The CDC uses the rhetorical strategies of logos, ethos, and pathos effectively by using them optimally on its page on ADHD, even though they may not all be included equally in the text. Firstly, the use of logos is ever-present in the CDC’s page on ADHD. This briefing is primarily factual, which certainly appeals to one’s logic. This is evidenced by the introductory paragraph that describes and defines the disorder, foreshadowing that the page will be based on facts (“Attention-Deficit”, 2016).
