Therefore, I produced another drawing that incorporated the monochromatic elements and expanded on the visual characteristics by introducing various colors. I intended to incorporate both a bleak and colorful perception of the girl in order to symbolize the manner in which East Asian countries view races and the fashion in which diversity should be perceived. Instead of whitening the woman’s face, I decided to illuminate her appearance using colored pencils. By not limiting the woman to simply two shades, I strove to display the distinctiveness of her character and the true colors behind her skin tone. Nevertheless, the absence of color in the paint splatter indicates the continued existence of a limited perception of skin color within the eyes of society. Comparable to the first drawing, I signified how society sees through a black and white lens, concentrating only on the good and the bad. The inclusion of the paint brush served the purpose of illustrating the effort of whitewashing the population, as well as the culture. Both hands attempt to “correct” features of her face, either painting a new skin color or reconstructing her facial appearance. The hands are bolded with a black outline to draw the viewer’s attention to those regions; their conspicuous display exhibits the significant role society plays in self-image.
