The Problem:
The Bronx community in New York City is what I call home. Just like any home, it’s not perfect and has it’s faults, one of them being high rates of obesity. The community provides a variety of places for it’s inhabitants to obtain food, for example supermarkets, fast food restaurants, and even vegetable stands. The only problem is the amount of fast food restaurants within the community. There was only one supermarket, one vegetable stand and a substantial amount of fast food restaurants when I did my observation back in October. The people occupying …show more content…
In the Bronx, there is a store on every corner or every block; sometimes even two. Bodegas also known as “corner stores” sell everything from sugary drinks to potato chips. Whenever someone is hungry late at night, they don’t prepare a salad they would rather go to the corner store and fulfill all their sugary cravings there. According to an article in DNAinfo New York by Patrick Wall (2013), Wall discusses how people who are trying to reduce the obesity rate are looking into bodegas because they are the cheapest and appear more frequently. The instructor also asks that students take a picture of all the meals they prepared from the handout and make a collage using Photoshop or an online application and then print them out. The collages will be given to the instructor the next time the students see them. Books and Meals also wants parents to get involved, if they cannot attend these presentations then the instructor will still give the student a handout with the list of meals for those two weeks and when the student arrives home they can give their parents that sheet. The instructor will also provide their contact information at the bottom of the handouts, just incase any questions arise that were not addressed in the presentation. The organization is also working on getting stipends for the supermarket within the 167 Street communities with an estimate of about 60 dollars so that the students and the parents will have enough money to continue on with this program. The vouchers are only given to those students whose parents come to the meetings and sign an agreement form. If the parent does not attend, then they will not receive the
