In the belly of the country lies the United Mine Workers of America. This union currently has over 800,000 members and has been representing miners for over 125 years. The United Mine Workers of America was created as a way to protect miners, specifically in the coal mining field. However, today the United Mine Workers of America has blossomed from representing the mining industry to manufacturing, health care and the Navajo Nation (United Mine Workers of America, 2017).
While the name only has miners in it, this union is diversely structured. The union is broken down into different forms of leadership and representatives. Currently the United Mine Workers of America is led by Union President Cecil Edward Roberts Jr and …show more content…
These workers are mostly nurses. However, many x-ray technicians and physical therapy workers are represented as well. While these forms of labor are very different from the miners, the issues can be similar. Number of hours, work-place safety and benefits remain the heart of the issues the United Mine Workers of America fight to protect and improve (United Mine Workers of America, 2017).

However, The United Mine Workers of America lobbied for the Senate Bill 175 and House Resolution 179. The priority was to secure health care benefits of thousands of retirees from Patriot Coal, Walter Energy, and Alpha Natural Resources (Gov Track, 2017).
This issue spear headed by the United Mine Workers of America led the way to amending the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation act of 1977. This amendment will address shortages in health benefits and is seen as a huge win for the United Mine Workers of America. This continued fight for retired members of this union and the wining outcome only validates the strength of the United Mine Workers of America for new members (Gov Track,
