Client: Well, I wanted to talk about some grief counseling. My son who died at thirty, his death anniversary will be on the 16th (in 3 more days) and his birthday will be on the 25th, and in June I have a very hard time …show more content…
Counselor: So if he had still been alive would you tell me more, if he hadn’t passed away suddenly how you would feel.
Counselor reflection: I am reflecting on how life would be for the client if her son was still alive. I would like to know more about what this means for the client.
Client: I think I would still felt he was very close to me and he told me once, “Mom the other children are the children of your heart and I’m the child of your soul.”
Counselor: So what does that mean to you the ‘child of your soul’?
Counselor reflection: I am asking an open question to find out more information about the statement, “child of your soul”. I want to know what this means for the client.
Client: It means that he was a very special person, I love all my children but he was very special one.
Counselor: So maybe more special than the others?
Counselor reflection: I am restating to see if I understand the client’s information about the statement, “child of your soul”.
Client: In closeness, yes.
