The United States has come a long way since the days of the American Revolution or either of the World Wars. Today war is all about airstrikes, drones, and the use of any other new technology in order to find a way to keep our troops at home and fighting conflicts without having “boots on the ground” as the saying goes. However even with, or perhaps because of, this new technology our country finds itself involved in conflicts that are unconventional to what we have seen in our history. The young generation of Americans today has grown up learning about the wars against terrorism where the enemy is hard to really signal out from a large crowd. We have become accustomed to fighting against what Max Boot calls “invisible armies” because it’s…

The arts of the western world have been largely dominated by the artistic standards established by the Greeks of the classical period. It is from the Greek word “theatron” meaning “a place for sitting”. It is said that the Greeks were the first people to erect special structures to bring audiences and theatrical performers together. The theatres were normally located near a populated area at the bottom, or cut out of a carefully selected, sloping hillside overlooking a seascape, plain, or city. They would then largely be constructed with three distinct parts: the theatron (viewing place) for spectators, the orchestra where the chorus and actors performed; and a later addition, the skene (scene building), which provided a scenic backing.…

There’s a cynical ridiculousness in the low-key “The Treasure”, the fourth fictional feature from Corneliu Porumboiu, author of “12:08 East of Bucharest” and “Police, Adjective”. I confess I expected more from the Romanian director/screenwriter, especially if we take into account the more valuable cinematic treasures mentioned above. All the features that characterize Mr. Porumboiu’s directorial approach can be found in his new deadpan comedy, which starts in a curious way, becoming overdetailed in its midsection, only to resuscitate in its laughable final part. Costi (Cuzin Toma) is a caring father, despite arriving late at school to pick up his son, Alin (played by Cuzin’s real-life son, Nicodim), a Peter Pan enthusiast who’s often beaten up by another kid.…

What is Arlington National Cemetery? Why does it matter to us in present-day American civilization? Many people ask these questions, and others that are similar, when the topic is brought up, because they lack an understanding of, or knowledge of, the answers. What those people don’t see is that Arlington is much more than a large patch of land filled with hunks of rocks and chunks of stone buried in the ground. Arlington is actually many other, more important things: a place of rest for some, a place of mourning and remembrance for others.…

This is visited by many civilians every day and has a wreath placed by the President. In Washington D.C., the President allows four students to place a wreath in honor of the soldier buried. This prestigious ritual occurs around the world and is made each day at the Arlington National Cemetery.
