This review is based on the video “To Clot or Not to Clot; That is the Question” recorded by the Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital. The video describes the performance improvement techniques applied during the Surgical Care Improvement Project. This paper provides a list of relevant actions taken by the health professionals to significantly improve the quality of patient care. Moreover, this paper focuses on two relevant actions of the care team: bringing stakeholders such as clinicians and nurses together to find a better way of patient care and monitoring the target population having high risk of complications after surgery. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human services, “Health care performance is defined by an organization's efficiency and outcome of care, and level of patient satisfaction” (HRSA, 2015). The quality of an organization directly depends on the system and process of their approach to deliver care. The team at Texas hospital implemented the best strategies to improve the quality of care in surgery. First, the team identified a target population with high risk for complications after surgeries. By paying special attention to the patients and monitoring rates of DVT Prophylaxis, the health professionals determined various ways to reduce the prevalence of blood clots. At the end of their project, they were able to achieve 90% of the average DVT Prophylaxis from 30% among the target patients. This extraordinary success of the project was an outcome of adequate preparation, strong collaboration, and proper management by the health care professionals involved. QI team was focused on outcomes, after getting the numbers back; the team planned to use the data efficiently to take further steps. 4. QI focused on target patients, paying special attention to the target group of patients, who were having open-heart surgery, hip and knee surgery, colon surgery, elderly patients coming from nursing homes, and those who had infections.
5. QI team focused on descriptive characteristics of data, developing a group called “Perfect Care Team” which specifically looked at surgical indicators, in 2007.
6. QI team was competent, being aware of the complications with having blood clots in legs and more serious complications from pulmonary embolism. The team members were imminently involved in the veins and venous and trundle embolism with the expertise.
7. QI team was focused on internal process, looking at surgical care indicators to determine how to improve looking at the symptoms and the process internally.
8. QI team was involved in meetings, bringing clinicians, nurses, pharmacists, and doctors at a table to discuss together what was best for patients.
9. QI team was focused on needs of the customers, putting the sequential machine in the OR, which is similar to a compression device on patients’ legs that helped blood return to prevent blood
