The two types of stimulants that I will discuss in this paper are cocaine and amphetamines. According to Preston, O’Neal, and Talaga (2010) “One million Americans are reported to be addicted to cocaine and over five million use it on a daily basis” (p. 148). Cocaine is considered one of two psychoactive stimulants that are derived from coca leaves that are grown in the mountains in South America. During the second half of the 19th century, many patent medicines and drinks that were sold which contained cocaine, for example, Coca Cola that was formulated prior to 1903. There was one scientist that was very enthusiast about cocaine use and that was Sigmund Freud. He thought it was an important tool to use so that morphine dependence and depression could be cured.
Unfortunately, Freud realized that cocaine use became a drug that people became dependent. During the 1980s, there was a shift in attitudes concerning cocaine use for example the price. Furthermore smokeable crack cocaine expanded in the cocaine abuse problem crossed into new segments of the population, which made cocaine one of the major social issues during that time which continues into present-time.
Amphetamines are traced back to a Chinese medicinal herb that was used for thousands of years that helped dilate the bronchia’s. The active ingredient is ephedrine, which was isolated back in 1887.
