It is important to have people in your life who you can rely on, look up to as mentors and help you develop as a person. In Gary.D Schmidt’s novel “The Wednesday Wars”, Holling Hoodhood is a seventh-grade student attending Camilla Junior High in Long Island during The Vietnam War. Holling has to stay in every Wednesday afternoon with the teacher who “hates [Holling’s] guts”(Schmidt 7), Mrs.Baker, but throughout the novel, Holling and Mrs.Baker develop a strong relationship and Mrs.Baker becomes one of Holling’s mentors. Holling read The Merchant of Venice, the Tempest, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar, and Hamlet. He related a lot to the protagonists and learnt valuable lessons from reading Shakespeare. During November when Holling read “The Tempest” he learnt that the quality of mercy is not strained and that mercy is shown by choice. “ ‘Thank you for the creampuffs’ I said. ‘The quality of mercy is not strained.’ she said” (Schmidt 71). Holling promised to buy 24 creampuffs for his class because his friends thought that he had one for himself and didn't believe him when he said that he didn't so, Holling’s friends got upset and gave him death threats until he gave them and their class creampuffs. It wasn't very easy for Holling to buy 24 creampuffs because he didn't have a lot of money at the time and his father refused to raise his allowance.
