Music therapy is a popular treatment that helps those who have struggles become able to overcome obstacles in one life. Music therapy is a common remedy for those that struggle with psychological and physical issues. Music therapy is a healthy alternative used worldwide to help those that struggle with different issues. Physically, music can improve heart rates, respiration, increase in blood flow, body movement, coordination and can help a person in the process of rehabilitation (“How Music Affects Us”). Emotionally, music has the power to lower levels of cortisol, which a stress hormone. Music also has the power to change ones mood (happy, sad, angry and so forth). Socially, music helps people express themselves using something other than words (“What Is Music Therapy”). Music also provides the opportunity for people to bond over the same music taste (“Music Developments”). Cognitively, music helps increase concentration and productivity. Music therapy provides support for those who have social issues. Different skills can be influenced by the impact that music has on personal and social development. “Playing a musical instrument can lead to sense of achievement; an increase in self-esteem’ increased confidence; persistence in overcoming frustrations when learning is difficult; self-discipline; and provide a means of self-expression. These may increase motivation for learning in general thus supporting enhanced skills (Hallam 2).
Music therapy involvement in the therapeutic matter, patients’ abilities and skills are strengthened and transferred to other areas of their lives. Music therapy has the ability to provide avenues for communication that can be helpful to those who find it difficult to express themselves verbally (“What Music Therapy Is”). Music has the power to connect individuals to each other who may not otherwise realize they have things in common. Sharing a passion for certain types of music, creates a special bond, it can help provide children with a way in which they can socialize
