Throughout many stories we always see the males at a powerful position and the women tend to be the over bearing crazy type. Whenever something goes wrong we as the audience are always quick to blame to female or say it’s because she having a mental break down. The tragedy of Medea is no different. We all assume that Medea took her rage and acted out in an awful way due to no fault of anyone else. But the truth is that if it wasn’t due to Jason’s selfishness and betrayal to Medea, she would have never acted in the manner that she did, and the blame is to fall upon Jason. Medea’s honor is tarnished by Jason. This is brought to life through Medea’s nurse. “But now, there’s only hatred. What should be most loved has been contaminated, stricken since Jason has betrayed them- his own children, and my lady, for a royal bed. (Pg. 787, 20).” Though Medea claims to wish to die in the opening of the play, due to her broken heart, her nurse knows her true rage and knows what she is capable of.
Medea demonstrates the natural feelings of betrayal and grief of having a loved one leave. Like any female or male who has been dumped for another would naturally feel. Jason leaves for a selfish reason. Jason wants to have bigger and better things and feels he can only get these things if he marries the Glauce, the princess. Logically Medea feels hurt and worthless. From Jason leaving her she is releasing that she has nothing, she doesn’t even consider the children, like most women would. Most Mothers would think of their children first and carless about the man, but Medea is so love struck that she can’t even bear to look at the children. Medea places her pride above all things and doesn’t want to be made to look weak.
Medea goes through the typical stages of a break up, first depression with her thoughts of death, and then anger which for her turns into revenge, and what should be next is acceptance and moving forward, but unfortunately for Jason and everyone involved, this is where Medea goes from subhuman to superhuman. Medea could have just used her abilities to hurt or kill Jason but she decides to take it a step further and take out everyone in her
