It is extremely important that leaders create an environment in which mistakes are not only allowed, but that are approached with kindness and a willingness to provide education (Hunter, 1998). It is true that leaders may have expectation and that there must be boundaries, however, patience means taking the emotional reaction out of context to better allow for professional development (Hunter, 1998). As I have learned, we can all be servant leaders in many contexts. What has made the biggest impression on me is the idea of love. According to Hunter (1998), we cannot always control the way that we feel about certain individuals, but we can control the way that we behave towards them. This idea is crucial in that it allows one to be human, but it also creates this expectation of treating people kindly, compassionately and with respect. When people feel respected, they are innately pushed to be the best version of themselves. Additionally, the art of active listening is on the forefront of my mind. Listening is one of our best chances to show people that we appreciate them and feel that they are significant (Hunter, 1998). In The Servant, Hunter describes servant leadership as love, “the verb”. Using the definition of agape love in First Corinthians as a model, Hunter would agree that patience, kindness, humility, respectfulness, selflessness, forgiveness, honesty, and commitment should be the basis of all relationships. Inverting the old paradigm of leadership, placing the leader at the bottom, models how the role of leader is to serve rather than be served. “…a leader is someone who identifies and meets the legitimate needs of their people, removes all the barriers, so they can serve the customer. Again, to lead you must serve.” (Hunter, 1998, p. 64). Hunter relates this agape love to all aspects of life, such as in relationships with family and friends, and relationships in the workplace. Ultimately, love is…

This concept of leadership implies that decisions are made to the betterment of those in powerful positions and not to serve the needs of an entire organization. Servant leadership changes this concept and places the importance of good leadership qualities on every part of an entire organization, by motivating others to “become the…

A servant leader engages the entire team or organization in a process that creates a shared vision, which inspires each person to stretch and reach deeper within himself or herself and to use everyone’s unique talents in whatever way is necessary to independently and interdependently achieve that shared vision (Greenleaf, 1977, p.3). Being a servant leader is what every great leader aspires to be. A servant leader is someone who does things for other people while not expecting any recognition in return for their work. As a leader, I try to possess qualities of a servant leader while completing everyday tasks in either my leadership class or during a basketball or volleyball practice. Being a servant leader is stressed in the ASB Leadership class. In this class, all thirty of us complete tasks everyday that go unnoticed and unrecognized by our peers. We do not do these tasks in hopes of being recognized, we do them because we have a passion for serving others. This past month the ASB was called upon to arrange a group of student helpers to assist with the Anacortes School…

The principles of servant leadership consist of listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to the growth of others, and the ability to build a community (Spears, 2010). As a charge nurse of my unit, I am a servant leader who applies all these principles in my daily life. I listen to my coworkers patiently and become aware of the issues they are facing in their professional and personal lives. This awareness makes me empathize with them. The empathy would allow me to persuade them to take the right steps towards the healing process. The foresight from my previous experiences enables me to be a good steward. I can help my colleagues and contribute to their growth by supporting them. My support helps build a united staff community in our unit and enables me to form skills in conceptualization.…

With every passing week, I am gaining a clearer understanding of the principles of servant leadership and how these principles can be applied within my current role in my organization as well as how they can be applied in other settings. I found it interesting how even though recent research supports the use of servant leadership it is still not utilized in more often in today's workplaces (Heskett, 2013). Research from Linuesa-Langreo & Ruiz-Palomino (2016), showed that the use of servant leadership increased creativity and empowerment within the organizational culture, thus leading to improved productivity. While I still question the rational behind organizational leaders not utilizing servant leadership principles more…
