We can daydream and think about miscellaneous ideas and theories a great deal, however in order to comprehend, compromise, reflect and evaluate fundamental ideas and theories, it is required to break down information through cognitive skills. By doing so, this results in exercising ones critical thinking abilities. Within this essay, the concept of critical thinking – underpinned by critical theory, will demonstrate and explain how this approach would be of assistance to researchers and educators within an early childhood setting and when dilemmas arise within the setting. Amongst these concepts, ethics, ethical considerations, sensitivity and research will be weaved throughout.

The principles of practical reason, critique and reflective judgement all collaborate to deconstruct the dominant discourses and ideologies that the majority of society has conducted in turn open-handily gives power back to the minority groups to create a sound foundation. Through that, you can begin to build and understand why ethics play an important part within research. Within early childhood education, it is vital to all educators and ones who participate in an ece setting that these ethical frameworks are upheld so that research can be conducted in a respectful and comprehensive manor and decreasing the chance of any dilemmas such as ethical dilemmas. Before carrying out research, the researcher must abide by the multiple ethical guidelines and considerations for a valid comprehensive research outcome. Each guideline and principles must be address in order for the research to commence and be maintained. New Zealand Association Guidelines for research in education has a document called ethical guidelines that demonstrated and explain what aspects researchers and registered teachers need to address when conducting research (New Zealand Association for Research in Education, 2010, & New Zealand Teachers Council, 2006). Parallel to that is Early Childhood Code of Ethics National Working Group’s document Early Childhood Education Code of Ethics for Aotearoa/New Zealand.” The code of ethics is needed so that there are guidelines for professional conduct; enhance the protection of children and educators and to provide support in building unity (Early Childhood Code of Ethics National Working Group, 1996). These documents are valuable in guiding all when ethical dilemmas occur in professional teaching situations. Ethical considerations such as the rights of the participants must be respected.
