Is environment or genetics within reared-apart twins a top factor? The Minnesota Twin Family Study (1999) that took place over 20 years, led by Thomas Bouchard, studied 137 pairs of twins, 81 identical and 56 fraternal twin sets. With some 170 additional studies relating genetics and environment factors associated to human development (Twins Separated at Birth Reveal Staggering Influence of Genetics, 2014). However, where is the line between gaining scientific knowledge into human development and the ethical issues of how we obtain the research evidence. Within this essay, I will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of these types of studies. I will connect …show more content…
An interesting environmental factor especially during World War II. During Minnesota Twin Family Study (1999), the study found upon closer examination that while Yufe and Stohr had different political views – one liberal, one conservative – (these were contributed to external factors related to their upbringing), their remarkable similarities – excelling at sports, trouble with math, liked spicy food, and the innate habit of faking a sneeze in uncomfortable silent situations – were more contributed to epigenetics (Wang, 2015). Leading us to learn that there is more to our personality, from a genetic standpoint then we originally thought.
Twin studies help to educate us on the effects of nature vs nurture within human development. When Dr. Claudia Englbrecht (2015), states that while scientific studies and evolutionary theory have given us the information about the interaction of genes and environment in the development of traits. Scientists are not satisfied with the mere notion that genes and environment both affect our traits (Englbrecht). This can be attributed to our human need for life-long learning. Which is one of the things science has been trying to provide for ten …show more content…
The pre-conventional level is about obedience and hopeful behaviour, which was where each of the sets of twins started, including Yufe and Stohr. While the article discusses how Yufe enters the second of Kohlberg’s stages, the conventional level of living up to other expectations and following rules to maintain social order by becoming one of Hitler’s youth during World War II. There was a moment in 1979 when Oskar told Jack that as a boy he admired Hitler (Separated at Birth: The Nazi Twin Meets the Jewish Twin, 2014). This time, Jack (2014) wanted to understand how that is possible. “It shows what a smooth propaganda machine can do to children’s minds,” he said (Separated at Birth: The Nazi Twin Meets the Jewish Twin, 2014). Neither of the twins was able to make it to the post-conventional level, because of the events that took place during the first and second
