If it is believed that this narrative shows that the deity has the ability to control the land, the question is raised, if the deity could command and control the land in Genesis chapter four, is the deity still able to control the land today? Is the deity causing the environmental problems today? For some, it is easier to believe that the deity is causing the problems than to accept that humans are; if it is the deity doing this, we do not have to make any changes or take responsibility.
The relationship between the deity, the land, and humans is complex from the start of the Bible. In the punishment, humans have the least amount of agency; at no point was the human able to control the land or the deity. However, the narrative in Genesis four raises more questions than answers about the land’s agency and the deity’s control of the land.
