Two Stories of Prejudice Prejudice: preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience. The book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a story of prejudice which takes place during the Great Depression in the Maycomb County, Alabama. The story is told from the perception of an intelligent, 6 year old girl named Jean “Scout” Finch. A film named The Help, is another story of prejudice, it takes place during the Civil Rights movement in Jackson, Mississippi and focuses on an outspoken, young woman named Eugenia “Skeeter” Phelan. While there many differences between these two stories they become very distinct when discussing the maturity of some characters which creates a rift between them. However, these two are stories are nearly identical when examining individuals who go against the crowd for what they believe is right and characters who were maternal figures in the main characters lives. One comparison between To Kill A Mockingbird and The Help is the presence of highly moralistic characters who defend disadvantaged minorities even when most of their peers scorn them for doing so. Atticus Finch, a well respected lawyer and Scout’s father, from To Kill A Mockingbird defends Tom Robinson, an African-American man, in a rape trial. During the case, Scout hears a man in the courtroom say, “Yeah but Atticus aims to defend him. That’s what I don’t like about it” (Lee 163). Numerous individuals in Maycomb demand Tom Robinson sent to prison or even killed.…
