There are any examples of people being prejudice. Throughout the town of Maycomb, Boo Radley is known as a “monster” for stabbing his father while he was scrapbooking. Although this is a terrible thing, nobody knows for sure why he did it. Maycomb is not really giving Boo a chance to prove himself/for them to get to know the person he truly is. Scout, Jem, and Dill would also make up stories or believe every story they heard about Boo. Heck! They believed “Boo was a 6 ½ ft-He dined on raw squirrels and any cat he could catch-there was a long jagged scar that ran across his face; the teeth he had left where yellow and rotten; his eyes popped and he drooled most of the time” (13). Jem, Scout, and Dill showed how prejudice they are by believing all these crazy stories they heard about Boo. They have never seen Boo before, but they still think that everything people say is true. They also begin to act out factious events from Boo’s life. However when Atticus finds these things out he is very upset. He is disappointed with the boys would be so rude and judgmental. He wants the boys to judge people not from what they hear, but from what they see. Atticus says “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his or her point of view.”(30). which is saying you never can truly understand someone until you walk a mile in their shoes. Atticus gets at this life lesson throughout the book and really tries to help boys understand that Boo Radley is just like them. The boys unfairly and unrightfully judged Boo Radley before even meeting him. They never really gave him a chance to prove that he is just like them. This is only one of the very many examples of prejudice in the book! Which leads me to my next example of prejudice when the people of Maycomb stared to call Atticus things like a “nigger lover” when he decides to represent Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson is a man accused of raping Mayella Ewell. Atticus takes the case because he believes every lawyer has a chance to prove themselves to be a great lawyer and Atticus believes this is his! Little did he know that taking this case would cause …show more content…
Walter Cunningham is a boy who lives in Maycomb. His family doesn’t really have money there for they are judged pretty harshly. When Scout tries to invite Walter over for lunch, Aunt Alexandra says “I’ll tell you why” she said “He’s trash, that why you can’t play with him” (225). Aunt Alexandra most likely came from a very good family line because they seem pretty well off. Because of her heritage she and her family believed that they are better than everyone else. As a result of this Aunt Alexandra really upsets Scout. I’m sure it wasn’t on purpose however Scout was not very happy with her Aunt. Jem attempted to calm her down but it didn’t really work. Scout even says “She doesn’t like me, that’s all there is too it” (225). Scout feels hated by her aunt. But wouldn’t you? Aunt Alexandra corrects her on every single thing that she does. Aunt Alexandra doesn’t give Scout or Walter a chance to prove themselves she just jumps to an unfair not right
