Author of nonfiction book “The Spirit Catches You and You Fall”, Anne Fadiman relays the questions to her readers in her preface: “What makes a good parent?” and “What makes a good doctor?” As far as anyone is concerned for the latter question, specifically what makes outstanding health care, Carolyn M. Clancy, MD, of the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality would describe quality health care as simply “getting the right care to the right patient at the right time – every time” (). Furthermore, she dissects this simplistic description apart, providing a multilayered perspective. Essentially, the key to quality health care is its three basic dimensions: STRUCTURE, PROCESS, and OUTCOME” (). With this theory in mind, it is obligatory that the hospital bases its future actions and changes on these dimensions as to advance health equity; however, the health care system must constitute its choice also on the basis of the often forgotten dimension, outcome, especially in the development of programs and initiatives associated with cultural humility.
Without a strong foundation, a building would be easily overwhelmed and collapse on itself, and the same can be said for the structure for a hospital’s health care system.
