Being a social worker is often a challenging, yet rewarding career. Social workers are responsible for helping individuals, families, and groups of people to cope with problems they’re facing to improve their patients’ lives. Social workers are also trained caseworkers in social service agencies who perform several functions which they use different components of the practice framework, the theoretical underpinnings to in order to build helping relationships. After interviewing a caseworker in a specific social agency there were advantages and disadvantages of methods along with challenges encountered in working in that specific agency. I saw in the interview that the focus on this relationship was significant in doing casework. The meaning of the relationship with individuals as a caseworker is very important. The relationship is dynamic because of the constant interaction of the feelings and attitudes between the social worker and the client which may increase or decrease throughout the problem-solving process, but never ceases as long as the relationship continues (Biestek, 1957). Some of the major qualities required to be a helping person has a wide span. During this interview my self- awareness kicked in, so I immediately started thinking about my relationship with my clients during Practicum. Did we have a relationship or a helping relationship? According to Dalai Lama a helping relationship is our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can’t help them, at least don’t hurt them. These policies are required for: effective and ethical social work practice, alignment of organisational and social work practice objectives, protection of the interests of service users, and promotion of good standards of practice and quality services. It is recognised that the context for practice varies according to local agencies.
The adoption and implementation of policies on workload and casework management make a major contribution to the provision of quality services to services users. Workload and casework management practices must consider the basic tenets of social work intervention, including the centrality of human relationships, the need to manage risk and complexity and the duty to highlight unmet need.
The physical working environment has an important part to play in the support of effective and ethical practice including, for example, the physical arrangements and procedures required for confidential interviewing and storage of confidential records. These are some of the challenges facing caseworkers and that impedes them from carrying out some of its core roles, functions and responsibilities in some social agencies in the
