Social Workers are often given enormous amount of caseload. Often one social worker could have over 30 cases they have to manage and investigate. The social workers Andy encounter all lack empathy. Many of the social workers are not genuine, promising actions that cannot be complete. It is unfortunately that some social workers are in this profession just to collect a paycheck. Many social workers reach a point in their career in which they become “burnout.” During this phase social workers are overwhelmed with the caseloads assigned to them resulting in stress, anxiety, depression and self-neglect. A social worker needs to realize this problem and engage in self-care to help them deal with the stressor of their employment. It is better to be straightforward and not keep a child in suspense. Andy quickly learned not to develop a trusting relationship with any social worker. His whole rationale of developing a secure relationship with others is damage because of all the deception he has experienced in his life. The system that was created to keep foster children safe has failed Andy resulting in distrust of all social workers. Many people helped his mother in an effort to help stabilize her living conditions. The Priest that allowed them to stay at his house, the elderly women that offered him cookies and complimented him for his manners all played a huge role in helping him escape the trauma he had experienced. Andy needed to find another label besides being the “foster kid” he created his new identity through education. Andy had several inspirational teachers that never judged or questioned him about his family. They saw Andy for his potential he demonstrated through his academic success. With this support he was able to overcome the loneliness and sadness in his life. Although he had a lot of conflict with Leonard’s they truly became his family. During Andy’s sixth grade graduation when he wrapped his arms around his foster mother and held her close. It is these moments of intimacy that allowed him to overcome
