The first steps of the LGBTQ+ movement were taken during the 19th century. Sodomy was considered a crime in many countries and their colonies; it was only decriminalized by those countries that followed the French legal model, which considered crime only the behaviour that harmed third parties.
In Europe, those countries were France, Spain, Belgium, Luxemburg, Holland, Portugal, Italy and Bavaria (before the formation of the German Empire); while in America there were only four: Brazil, Mexico, Guatemala and Argentina. In the rest of the countries homosexuals suffered prison sentences of 5 to 10 years, and in some cases life sentences.
