Final American Literature paper
The three works that I chose to write about for my final paper for this class are the “Way to Wealth” (1758) by Benjamin Franklin “The Raven” by Edger Allan Poe and “The legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving. The reason that I chose to write about these three pieces is that they really stuck out to me the most in this class. The Way to Wealth stuck out to me one because I had never read it before so it was nice to read something new and it also made me think about what the word wealth actually means. Then I picked The Raven because it is one of my favorite of Edger Allan Poe’s work I love most of his work but The Raven is definitely my favorite. The last that I picked as I said earlier is The Legend

It is not that it is a bad piece I have always heard about the story and always wanted to read it but never did and I do not think I would read it again. It is a creepy and dreary story and just unsettling but that is why I wanted to write about it. I do believe everyone should read it at least once in their life because reading new things is always good because you will not know what you like until you try. This piece is very confusing as well like honestly is the horseman real or not was the other man just messing with him or was he just crazy and seeing things. In my honest option, I think he is just crazy and imagining things because yes the one man was jealous and want the girl for himself but witch in the end he did get her but even though he is so jealous why would he take time out of his life to mess with him so hard. I also do not think that the horsemen is real I mean don’t get me wrong I believe in all kinds of supernatural things but this is just super outrages and unbelievable. For one thing, why is he the only one to be able to see him? I mean yes I get that this story is fiction but I think he is just crazy because back then people did not know much about mental issues and all this story sounds like is that he I …show more content…
But if all these authors can do it so can I can I think that is one thing I like about reading is that it gives you a little bit of courage they teach you that it is okay to put your thoughts out there no matter what people say. That is what they do and you no people where and still are judging their works. I guess that is one reason I like taking English or literature classes because you learn to be brave and you can have adventures through reading. So all pieces that I chose to write about that we had to read in your class this semester made me enjoy reading even ore then I already did. “The Raven” “The way to Wealth” and “The legend of Sleepy Hollow” will be pieces that stick with me for the rest of my life because of their meanings and the symbolism behind them. I truly believe everyone should read all of these pieces because at least one of them will have an effect on your

In Washington Irving 's "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and Edgar Allan Poe 's "The Cask of Amontillado," Brom Bones and Montresor take self-preservation to a far extreme. This idea of protecting one 's self and preserving one 's ability to achieve a certain status at any cost becomes a dark, greedy American ideal. At the beginning of both stories, Brom 's desire to destroy any suitor 's hopes of winning Katrina and Montresor 's joking tone leaving Fortunato unknowing of his fate reduce any chance of objection to their plans. As the narratives progress, both utilize their charming, American qualities to get society and the reader on their side, making themselves a hero. Towards the resolution of both short stories, Brom and Montresor 's societies…

Washington Irving, wrote the story, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” Many people have come to know this legend that tells the story of Ichabod Crane, the main character who disappears. Washington Irving does a good job in creating a ghost story, since no one really is able to know the ending of the story. He leaves it up to the reader to decide what happens. In addition, Washington Irving’s story has since been created into a movie called Sleep Hollow.…

The American short story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” was written while Washington Irving was living in England. Washington Irving wanted the film audience to capture a gothic tone that mirrors a slightly surreal place. Throughout the text, Irving describes Sleepy Hollow as, “Certain it is, the place still continues under the sway of some witching power, that holds a spell over the minds of the good people, causing them to walk in a continual reverie. They are given to all kinds of marvelous beliefs; are subject to trances and visions; and frequently see strange sights, and hear music and voices in the air.” (1.2).…

They put a curly, honey blonde wig on you, the color of hair you use to have before you dyed everything raven black. Your tight, sickening pale skin clung to your pores, and placid expression. Your eyes, which used to be a brilliant and enchanting blue, were closed so that those of weak mind, didn’t have to see the naked truth of pain. They tried to make you look alive, plastering your skin with artificial liquids. They gave you red lips; ironically the same color as your blood.…

The reading list composed of many pieces of literature that I was able to read over the course of this semester. The ones that I liked reading the most were by Edgar Allan Poe. He wrote these pieces of literature that was very mysterious; therefore, his works did not fully make sense when first reading them. He wrote them like this because of how his life was, and this is how he kept his readers on their toes. When the readers read his pieces, some would love what he wrote and others would not understand why he wrote that piece.…

Examples of this are the classic Simpsons Treehouse of Horror episode in which they parodied The Raven, R.L. Stine made a story based off The Black Cat. All of these elements combined could have taken a toll on his sanity, or maybe he already had a prone to craziness before, we do not know. The reason I believe this is because insane person do not believe in the falsehood of their delusions, and would claim and swear constantly that the things they believe and see are real. To me that’s probably one of the main reasons why he writes this story: to prove that his delusions were real and share a part of his…

His inability to distinguish between what is real and what he imagines shows that he is not mentally stable. And although he takes on the role of a storyteller quite well, calmly telling the tale, it is still blatantly apparent that his murderous crime is something only a madman would do. Ultimately, he is the agent of his own downfall. But perhaps the narrator is indeed not mad. Perhaps his senses were heightened, he was in a superior state and could reasonably decide to kill the old man.…
