“Let me control the textbooks, and I will control the state.” (Adolf Hitler) Common Core States Standard Initiative is a nationally known program created to set standards for the education systems. It is evident that the United States needs a solution to the education decline, but is Common Core that solution? Do the benefits outweigh the disadvantages or vice versa? These debated questions have been flaring up across the country. Looking deeper into Common Core, one must investigate where it came from, why it is needed, and how it affects society. Since most of Common Core incorporates current political issues, debates such as climate change, same-sex marriage, and evolution have erupted inside the classroom. These eruptions cause the potential for students to become victims of social bullying for their beliefs and teachers lose control of their classroom, as one mentions, “Such heated political debates are a type of distraction.” One may think Common Core only affects public schools, but that is wrong. The Common Core assessment tests don’t use the traditional multiple choice question and answers but, consequently, uses essay responses to defend answers. In hopes to get the students to think “out of the box”, test grades have lowered. This “one-size-fits-all” philosophy simply does not fit every student’s needs. On the same hand, parents weren’t informed or prepared for the switch to Common Core. Karen Light, a concerned mom, stated, “When you look at Common Core, what’s missing is family involvement.
