In the United States there is a problem of overcrowding on our prisons. Overcrowding is when the amount of prisoners in a prison exceed the amount of space that the prison has. This is a growing concern because it can cause many problems. It can cause misconduct among the inmates, psychological stress, poor prison conditions, and post release recidivism. The problem continues to grow and it seems nothing is being done about the issue and many people don’t even know we have this problem. However, there a few solutions to the problem in order to reform the overcrowding of prisons. There are too many people in prison and a lot of them should not even be there. There is a problem of sending people to prison for nonviolent crimes. This mostly includes drugs. When someone is in possession of crack cocaine for example, they are sentenced to a minimum of five years in prison. This seems to be pretty excessive and addicts don’t deserve to be in prison. They need actual help and treatment. Drugs are just as common now as they used to be in the past and sending addicts to prison has not helped. Drug addiction is one of the many problems in today 's society that doesn 't seem to be going down. Locking them up is not going to help them, it’s going to make things worse and lead to the problem of overcrowding in our prisons.
