In James Kouzes and Barry Posner’s book entitled, The Leadership Challenge: How to Make Extraordinary Things Happen in Organizations, the authors contend, the fundamental behaviors and actions of leaders are essential to exemplary leadership (Kouzes and Posner, 15-16).
The Five Fundamental Practices of Exemplary Leadership can be applied within the leadership development process from a military and church associate minister’s perspective in the manner of a servant-leadership model, with a following-Christ first mindset. Similarly, to that of the following-Christ first leadership style, a servant-leader is required to sit and weep with those who weep, while getting down and dirty when hard work has to be done, within one’s organization (Hans Finzel, 30), or church community. Also, it is understood that, as long as one is prepared with skills and styles needed to relate to others, this process implies anyone can lead (Rusty Ricketson, 9).
The development process would be church-vision focused. Careful detail to the vision of the church is always in the forefront (always remaining mindful). Upon establishing the purpose for the plan for the leadership process, with all members (leaders) involved, it is then introduced to the congregation. The purpose for the leadership development process is to create concrete spiritual opportunities to speak to as many people as possible, within the community of the church about Christ; knowing God and Jesus Christ.
