The Western Industrial Diet, The Paleo Diet, and Our Ancestors Not only is every person’s diet different, but diets have evolved for many generations. The current Western Industrial diet is much different than the diet of our early ancestors. The changes in diet can occur for many different reasons. Some of these reasons include the improvement in technology, cooking styles, and hunting strategies. When comparing the Western Industrial diet and the diet of the early ancestors, there are some big differences but also some similarities. The diet of our ancestors relied largely on the hunting and gathering food getting strategy. Unlike many beliefs, the ancestors’ diet did not rely solely on meat. According to National Geographic, the people usually got thirty percent of their annual calories from animals (Gibbons, 2014). With the lack of weapons and tools, the hunt for meat was very difficult and time and energy consuming. It is believed that they used more of a foraging strategy and relied largely on plants. In fact, seventy percent of their diet was made of plants (Gibbons, 2014). As time went on, improvements in hunting, cooking, and technology changed the diet …show more content…
One in particular is the Paleo diet. “The paleo diet is based upon everyday, modern foods that mimic the food groups of out pre-agricultural, hunter-gatherer ancestors.” (The Paleo Diet, 2016). Eating a Paleo diet is said to be a good diet for weight loss. The diet suggests a high protein intake, with meat being the staple food of the diet. Which according to anthropologists this not accurate to our ancestors’ diet. The diet also suggests that fresh fruits and vegetable are essential and should make up a majority of the everyday diet. Eating fruits and vegetables help lower carbohydrate intake, increase fiber intake without the use of whole grains, increase potassium intake, and lower sodium intake which are all important aspects of the Paleo diet. It was interesting to learn that even though the Paleo diet recommends fruit and vegetables to help achieve weight loss, and a lower carbohydrate consumption to lessen the chance of high blood glucose levels, there's no guarantee you will drop pounds. Besides these factors, a study conducted on mice, revealed that an increase in glucose intolerance, insulin, and extreme weight gain were inevitable.
