An 18th century genealogy book claimed that he was the son of the Russian prince Glanda Kambila, who came to Russia in the second half of the 13th century and fled the invading Germans.
Some historical artifacts point to the idea that Kobyla came from a not so royal family because Kobyla does not only mean “mare” in Russian and some of his relatives had names relating to horses and other domesticated animals.
