At first glance, “The Judge” seems to depict a man facing justice in a courtroom, but on a deeper level it represents Joseph standing in front of God. Joseph uses metaphors, biblical allusions,…
Just like Abigail and her friends, the judges let their power and authority distort their view and corrupt their decisions. When extracting a confession out of Tituba, Reverend Hale reassures her, “The Devil can never overcome a minister” (Miller 1261). Though this statement is meant to comfort Tituba in a time of extreme terror, in actuality, it only shows the extent of the judges’ pride and arrogance. Most of the judges are ministers, and because it is believed that ministers can not be affected by the Devil, Hale and the other judges think very highly of themselves. They view themselves as superior to everyone else, which in turn, makes it all the more easier to condemn the innocent.…
Introduction In order to understand the status of women in the Old Testament it is important to first understand the culture of the Old Testament. Many of the laws that were implemented were not necessarily because of women inequality but for the protection of the women. Feminist today may view the scripture as misogynistic because they do not understand the culture of the time or are simply examining and analyzing from a modern perspective. The intentions of God is never to create inequality among sexes.…
Throughout history the law and social justice was often approached in differing ways from one society to another. The presence of law was based on several different factors. Religion, morals, rituals, and multiple other elements influenced the affect law and social justice would play in a civilization. The roles of individuals in their society, the influence of religion and social hierarchy can affect the enforcement of social justice and the basis of a society’s laws. Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, and Ancient India all had similarities and differences in their attitudes towards law and social justice.…
One judge in particular resigned from the court after the hearing of Bridget Bishop (Rice, 1997, p.76). This judge was one of the first to see the injustice being served within the community and decided he could not go any further. The Puritans such strong beliefs also played a huge bias in how these trials were conducted. Not only was there lack of evidence for these men and women, the judges themselves were ministers and magistrates (Rice, 1997, p.78). The mere fact that people deciding one’s fate are ministers in a case surrounding the devil; is very worrisome for any accused.…
The definition of justice is ever-evolving in our society. Today, we define justice as “the maintenance or administration of what is just especially by the impartial adjustment of conflicting claims or the assignment of merited rewards or punishments.” However, in eighteenth-century Babylonian society, the boundaries and definitions of justice were a relatively new subject for the people. Before the rule of the Babylonian king, Hammurabi, the parameters of justice were unstructured and undetermined. In a need of unification and centralization, King Hammurabi sought to use his authority from the gods to establish order and protection among the Babylonian people.…
God on Trial & The Trial of God Although God on Trial was a movie based off of Wiesel 's play, The Trial of God, there are many differences between the two. Based on the same idea the two differ in many aspects through the setting, tone, and ironic portrayal of main characters, but they are similar in the conviction that they give at the end of each story. Each trial ends up being ironic in their own way.…
James utters, “The judge is God.” Henry,”Why is he God?” Both Samantha and James say, “Because he decides who wins or loses,…
Law in the Middle Ages consisted of many important courts and jurisdictions. The judicial system offered three types of courts to solve many different problems. The first type of court was the church court. The Church court or Ecclesiastical court is “a tribunal set up by religious authorities to deal with disputes among clerics or with spiritual matters involving either clerics or laymen” (“Ecclesiastical Court”). The church court was considered the most powerful with a big jurisdiction.…
The biblical book of 1 Samuel lays out the foundation of some of ancient Israelis most famous and influential kings, describing in detail the rise of king David, and the reign of his predecessor Saul. However, while presented as Israeli history, the tales of Samuel possess a clear bias in favor of King David, as the text attempts to exonerate him of any wrongdoing during his rise to king. 1 Samuel 25, a small excerpt from this larger kingship narrative, possesses important social and literal conflicts, as it broaches the notions of honor and shame, two principles of upmost importance in ancient Israeli society. The narrative tells of David’s positive challenge to a rich land owner, Nabal, requesting an offer of hospitality in exchange for his…
History is the story of our existence. Always evolving, human beings have become the dominant species on the planet. With that power and knowledge, it's shaped our society, country, our world in to what it is today. When studying Modernity, historians have been able to find the edge of when that began. It originated in the 1750's.…
You have succinctly described the miscarriages of justice found in both scenarios. Taking on your Biblical Perspective, God loves justice and commands humanity to champion for it. As an officer of the court with broad discretion, the office of the prosecutor would forever be seen as unprofessional and criminal if one prosecutor destroyed evidence pointing towards guilt of a defendant. The prosecutor represents the people against those charged with violating laws therefore to also engage in the violation of public safety and laws would be contradictory to a prosecutor’s oath and ethics. This reasoning also follows through to the second scenario in which the defense attorney allows a client to be found guilty.…
In the book of Judges it is evident that Israel’s constant disobedience in the eyes of God has led them in a downward spiral in history. As Israel goes deeper into rebellion and chaos, the cycle of rebellion remains and the judges themselves deteriorate. In the prologue of the book of Judges there is a recurring cycle of apostasy, oppression, penitence, and deliverance. The judges were all endowed by God to lead His people, but they were not always leaders of ideal character. In chapter one the Israelites fail to keep the covenant with God.…
In the Old Testament, a theme that is widely reflected between people and God is obedience. The relationships found throughout Old Testament were based on people’s obedience towards God’s instruction; probably making it one of the most important relational aspect. According to International Standard Bible Encyclopedia, obedience is defined as, “the supreme test of faith in God and reverence for him” (Obedience). God uses many prominent people in the Old Testament who obey and listen to what he calls them to do. For this paper, I’ll be using the story of Abraham as an example of obedience and go more in details about how God used Abraham’s life because he was obedient.…
