Poverty has major negative effects on the engagement of students in the classroom. There are seven different reason students to engage in the classroom. The phrase middle class Its self tells us very little about a person, the same way the word poverty tells us basically nothing about the students in schools. Seven differences between middle-class and low-income students show up at school. Teachers who take the time to understand those differences and how to handle them, help lessen some of the negative effects that are caused by poverty. Children from poor families are given food with low or almost no nutritional value. Poor nutrition during breakfast affects the gray matter mass in a child 's brains. Skipping breakfast is really common among the minority of urban youth, and it has negative affects on the students ' academic achievement. When students have poor nutrition and poor health, they have a harder time Learning, Concentrating, and listening. Having exposure to lead is connected with a weak ability to link cause and effect as well as a poor working memory. Ear infections may cause trouble with sound discrimination, there for making it really tough to follow any sort of directions and understand the teacher. Teachers that are uninformed may think that poor children show little effort because they are “lazy”. One of the reasons the students seem to be unmotivated is because they have a lack in hope and optimism. Low socioeconomic status and the financial hardships that come along with that status are linked to depression symptoms. Therefore the "I give up" posture most likely is a symptom of depression or a stress disorder. When Students show little or no effort they are simply giving feedback to the teacher. When you liked your teacher, and the material got you excited you worked harder. The key is encouragement. (Jensen)
Difference four: Hope and the Growth Mind-Set
Research shows that poor families often see negative evens in their future rather than positive ones. "Helplessness" is related to low socioeconomic status as well (Jensen). A student 's attitude towards learning is a strong predictive factor. If a students is convinced her or she will fail, they 'll likely not bother trying. The same goes for, if they think they are not going to succeed or that they are not smart enough, they 'll not put forth any
