The Truth in the Myth
Myths are all around us, trying to convey the message that there is something more out there. The myth had continued to say, “Every year it blooms on his death day, even though the ground is white and all the other trees are leafless” (Skinner). Does the tree really bloom on this death? The answer is no, however does the man’s soul stayed within the tree. No one can really have a solid answer about really happens, and that is why it is a very big mystery. No one ever come back to talk about life after dying. That is why so many people there are myth, legends, and fables base on someone that no one knows about. It is because no one knows that there are different ideas to what happens after life and living. The idea of something that humans do not know is foreign and terrifying. To make up for the feeling of terror, human beings come up with “good and bad” concept. History is the very important foundation that creates our present; therefore, it is very essential that it remains as accurate as possible. However, there are some cases in which the truths behind the history are stolen away, leaving only lies that people soon believe are true. This is the case with the 1995 Disney movie, Pocahontas. The very famous Disney movie, Pocahontas, shows lies about the life of Pocahontas that people soon believe as the truth. With using censorship in this movie, Disney builds a dramatized and flawed history of Pocahontas and illustrates a fake reality of who Pocahontas was.…

In a different scenario, imagine if this island was not just inhabited by boys, but by girls too. Also imagine other races being brought up into the mix. Would it have be so violent with most of the boys turning into savages? I think so. Even though the Lord of the Flies is a fictional depiction of a terrible event, I think real humans would have acted the same as William Golding described it to be.…

The greatest hero of Greece, was Hercules. The Greeks are much different from the people of 2016, and they valued courage and strength the most, while forgiving him because of their respect for his good deeds. The Greeks valued courage because in their time a common way of living was “survival of the fittest”. When Hercules proved he was courageous and strong to the people by fighting off monsters, he was immediately respected. “Throughout his life Hercules had this perfect confidence that no matter who was against him he could never be defeated, and facts bore him out” (Hamilton 226).…

In the articles “Three Cheers for the Nanny State,” “Ban the Ban!,” and “Soda’s a Problem but…”, all three authors present their arguments with facts, opinions, and counterclaims. However, one article presents itself better than the rest. I believe that the article “Soda’s a Problem, but...” was the most convincing article. Sarah Conly- the author who wrote “Three Cheers for the Nanny State”- argues that the soda restriction is a good idea because people would be stopped from making foolish decisions that they’ll pretty definitely regret.…

Often times, science fiction presents views of time travel that are inconsistent with the philosophical notions of time travel. Although A and B theory as well as Growing Block Theory are highly debated, for a science fiction film to gain philosophical credibility it must commit fully to one of these. I maintain that the time travel presented in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is consistent with B theory as presented by D.C Williams and directly follows David Lewis’ notion of time travel. In The Myth of Passage, D.C.…

Talia Markin In “The Pit and the Pendulum”, Poe shows his fascination with death and the supernatural. The story is filled with dark themes and outlines the nature of fear, alternate versions of reality, and the fine line between life and death. The protagonist’s insanity may be supported by the intricate descriptions of his torture and whether or not his suffering brought on by this trauma has actually occurred or not--it is difficult to tell. The narrator seems to jump around quite a bit between what he thinks could be happening, and what is actually happening, so it is hard to know whether or not what he is seeing is hallucinations or not.…

The purpose of Cassirer’s writing of “The Myth of the State” is to clarify how myth was able to capture great significance in the political discourse and thought from Europe and particularly from Germany in the first half of the twentieth century. Needless to say, this occurrence was not an accidental one according to Cassirer. He affirms that myth is not a clump of mistakes, but a way of thinking and symbolizing which remains at the origin of human culture. Cassirer’s own conclusion on myth may be summarized as follows: as opposed to art and science which gives us a unity of intuition and thought, “religion and myth gives us a unity of feeling. It begins with the awareness of the universality and fundamental identity of life” (37).…
