parents along with myself thought medication wasn’t good for me, but as I educated myself and tried it, it made me change my perspective. So I get when people think why should I try medication it’s not what I’m used to.
The second most effective and common method of Psychological Treatment is Psychotherapy. Specifically, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy which is when you talk to a therapist or psychiatrist, depending on your disorder and learn specific skills used to overcome problems that are psychically and emotionally affecting you. Cognitive therapy is based on the idea that our thoughts cause our feelings and behaviors, which is beneficial to us because we can learn to change the way we think to feel and act better. CBT was developed by Aaron T Beck an American psychiatrist and professor in the 1960’s. Through many tests, he found that depressed patients would have negative thoughts arising out of nowhere separating into three categories; negative thoughts about themselves, the world, and or the future.
Since mental illnesses have been around for a long time there are more methods than just Medication and CBT such as behavior therapy, humanistic therapy, psychoanalysis, psychodynamic therapies and much more. It is up to Doctors and patients to work together and decide what best fits the patients persona.
