“The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a man's determination” (Tommy Lasorda). This rousing notion is an integral factor of the protagonist’s success in Richard Connell's “The Most Dangerous Game”. Sanger Rainsford, a famous New York Hunter, fell overboard from his hunting charter in the Caribbean. He landed on a strange island, and on it he discovered a fellow hunter by the name of General Zaroff. Zaroff used this island to hunt the ultimate game; Man. After his refusal to partake in the twisted sport alongside the General, Rainsford found he was to be hunted himself. Through his remarkable experience of dueling nature and man alike, the author bespeaks the invigorating theme: People who have a sound sense of …show more content…
His first attempt to accomplish this was weaving like a panther through the brush to leave as much of a complex trail behind him so he could not be followed. After this, he promptly ascended a tree and slept. To his dismay and horror, the General could indeed follow his trail, and in the blackness of night (12). A cold realization then dawned upon him: the the general had spared him in order to enjoy another day's sport. However, Rainsford refused to stop fighting where other lesser men certainly would have broken down. Through his resolve, Rainsford then set out into the wilderness to once again play the cat and mouse game that is the hunt. Later, as the circumstances of his his situation become increasingly dire, he is burdened by an additional conflict, this being his ongoing battle within the confines of his mind to keep a level head which is expressed through his continuous reminders to himself of “I will not lose my nerve. I will not”(12). These mental checks helped him to keep his eye on the prize and greatly bolstered his drive to win the General’s depraved game. If Rainsford had not constantly kept his mind sharp with these mnemonics, he surely would have succumbed to his most primal instincts and lost his nerve

All animals hunt for survival, yet humans have developed a beastly way to make a game of it. In this sport, hunters thrive on the misfortune or weakness of others, while prey often forfeit the opportunity to avenge their attackers before it is too late. In rare occasions, the hunted will revolt and strike back, leaving the hunter astonished. This is best illustrated in Richard Connell’s, “The Most Dangerous Game,” when animal hunter Rainsford takes an unexpected journey to the house of General Zaroff, a hunter of an unusual prey, and is lured into playing a very deadly game of man versus man -- or man versus “beast.” Rainsford originally reveals no sympathy for his bounty of beasts, but upon becoming prey himself, Rainsford begins to transform…

“They were no match at all for a hunter with his wits about him, and a high-powered rifle” (Connel 6). The most dangerous game is a tale about a man named Rainsford, who gets thrown overboard by a rogue wave. He swims to a nearby shore, knowing that there were people there. He meets General Zaroff who, at first sight, seemed a harmless man intrigued by hunting. But as the story continues, it becomes clear to the reader that he is not a harmless man. Rainsford was a hunter on his way to Rio for some jaguar hunting. He seemed like a very carefree person, completely unconcerned about legends and superstitions. He was very level-headed. The General Zaroff also seemed very level-headed. He was very proud of his accomplishments and thought himself to be the best hunter. General Zaroff appeared very harmless at the beginning. General Zaroff could have very well been a kind man at one time. A man who cared about humanity and life but something changed in him to become the evil man he was. The author, Richard Connell, did a very good job in explaining why hunting is a good practice when it is for food or overpopulation. Hunting for sport is an awful practice because it institutes violence in…
