It affects the way people behave and the way people view themselves and others. To look attractive and appeal to people, the media presents characters in attractive images that are of covetable shapes, sizes, beauty among other features. Through this, the media achieves gaining attention from the people and thereby gaining in coverage. Presenting such images to the audience is beneficial to both parties. The media achieves public attention while the media gets a sample model to emulate in controlling factors of one’s body image especially shape and size. The continued emphasis on thinness and body curves plays a central role in peoples wanting to change their body images to resemble the represented images (Grabe, Ward and Hyde). This in itself is advantageous as people tend to work hard to check on their size and weight all in the name of achieving the desired body shape. Exercises are healthy to undertake each day and this media perception triggers it. People undertake exercises voluntarily and check on what they actually take in as food. Through food intake control, one is able to control the amount of calories taken in which may in return lead to a healthy eating. This however is not usually the case. The images portrayed are often times exaggerated and usually lead to more negative effects than to positive ones. The media is perceived by the audience as the widely accepted standard and as the perfect yardstick by which to measure self. This fact makes the media to have great influence in many aspects of life and especially the way people look. The media has succeeded in making people have an unrealistic perception of the “perfect” body shape and size. The skinny look of the images portrayed in the different media has sunk in peoples’ minds as the best shape and size, the one to emulate. This has both positive and negative effects on the audience. Whereas the perception may lead to controlled eating habits and regular exercise which is healthy, it may lead to uninformed eating irregularities and exercise which may be dangerous. Unrealistic images which may not be achievable may lead to stress and depression among other health complications to the audience and especially the teenager and the young
