In the beginning of Alice’s journey, she is a girl who is structured and poise. When Alice asks the Duchess “‘please would you tell me’…‘why your cat grins like that!’” (Carroll 49) she asks timidly “for she was not quite sure whether it was good manners for her to speak first” (Carroll 49). Although Alice begins her journey in Wonderland at a young age, readers can observe her interactions slowly old her into a young woman. In the beginning of Alice’s self-realization journey, she is very timid. Whereas, when Alice has multiple interactions with the Queen of Hearts, she learns to be bold and fearless in presenting her opinions to those around her. As Alice becomes “a ‘spoilsport’ and [begins] rejecting the rules thrust upon her, Alice learns to control her own fate, assert her own will and escape the game world she has created”
