The Comparison of Coraline & Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland

From “Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons are real but because they tell us dragons can be defeated” (G.K. Chesterton, Coraline) to “If you don’t know where you are going, any road will take you there” (Lewis Carroll, Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland). These two stories are very similar to each other, but still very different. Both are amazing stories are about a young girl who is led into a strange world where they have to challenge all odds in order to make it home. While these stories are very much alike, Coraline by Neil Gaiman has a dark twist that counteracts the wholesome dreamlike wonder

Coraline traveled to a dark opposite world, but Alice went to a bright, colorful world with many allies. Coraline’s main ally in in Coraline is the neighborhood black cat that I mentioned earlier in the essay, he was very snarky and had a slight attitude in every response that he gave Coraline, much like the Cheshire Cat in Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland, who was also very snarky and disappeared and reappeared as he pleased. Coraline tried very hard to get home and she thought of a plan to get her parents back, she tricked her “other mother” into thinking that she did not know where her parents were being held even though she knew that they were trapped inside the snow globe carefully placed on top of the fireplace. Alice confronted the King of Hearts when he declares that no one over a mile high can participate in court and when Alice goes against it he says that the rule was one of the oldest rules ever made, this is when Alice states that if it was one of the oldest rules then it would come before the other rules, so both girls are very logical and thought of plans very

A close study of the technique Drew Haden Taylor, the central character of “Pretty Like a White Boy”, and Joe, the central character of “Legless Joe Versus Black Robe”, respond to their encounters with problems they face almost everyday and use humor to reduce the pain their problems is causing them. Though the authors of “Pretty Like a White Boy” as well as “Legless Joe Versus Black Robe” have creative ways of crafting their work, these two writers expressed their similarities of humor usage in their characters, style and plot between their stories. In todays day and age, it is very common that movies are made and inspired from novels that are popular in the culture. People take strong ideas and stories from novels and manipulate them in order for them to succeed on the lime light. However, in most cases, changes are made in order to compress the movie. These vital changes can sometimes change the way a character is viewed and/or can change the literal flow of the book or movie. Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1883 adventure novel, Treasure Island, influenced and was made into a movie in 1950 by the Walt Disney Corporation.…

The similarities aren’t clear to see in the short stories, “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? and A Good Man is Hard to Find”, but if you look closely you can see multiple; one being that the main characters are both female, selfish, self-absorbed and conceited. This selfishness is shown by the grandmother; in A Good Man is Hard to Find, when she takes her cat on vacation, callously saying “because he would miss her too much and she was afraid he might brush against one of the gas burners and accidentally asphyxiate himself” (O’Connor 1097) cats are independent animals and its doubtful the cat would even know she was gone, but the reality is is that would miss the cat. Comparative to the grandmother, Connie in “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” demonstrates her selfishness by snubbing her families’ barbeque “rolling her eyes to let her mother know just what she thought of it” (Oates 2129).…

The children’s book Chrysanthemum written by Kevin Henkes is a classic piece of literature with an essential meaning within. Using the simple moral of the Golden Rule, Henkes shows this through the adventures of a mouse in a very social oriented time in children’s lives, pre-school. By using realistic fiction to depict a normal child’s experience through school, Henkes shows the ups and downs of having differences through the 13 letter name of the protagonist, Chrysanthemum. Even though the vocabulary is simple for matured ones, it is a new world for young ones using words such as “blushed” and others such as “bloomed” when used as a feeling. The book Chrysanthemum begins with Chrysanthemum growing up with love and affection from her parents.…

Most people on this earth, at one point or another, has had either a biological father or maybe even a “father figure” in their lives, whether for the entirety of their lives or maybe for a short period of time. Many have had fathers that have stayed with them, while others may have left their families for financial or other reasons. There are good fathers, but sadly there are bad fathers. Two stories we read in class involve fathers, “Powder” by Tobias Wolff and Amy Hempel’s “ Today Will Be a Quiet Day”, and although they are about father figures in the lives of children, they both take very different approaches to this topic.…

Pearl’s moral ambiguity shows in her transformation from being seen as a beacon of evil to being seen as an intellectual and socially aware young lady. By being a morally ambiguous character, Hawthorne is able to leave the reader in a perpetual state of apprehension regarding Pearl’s true moral alignment. From the moment Pearl is born, the little girl is treated like an outsider, and as a figure of evil and possible satanic origin. This view of Pearl comes forth in the personality during her early years. Pearl does not fit in with the rest of the children around her because of her connection to sin and evil.…

Coraline by Neil Gaiman is about a young girl named Coraline Jones discovering a door to her other life, other parents, and other struggles. I believe this book was excellent because the author Neil Gaiman, really went into detail about Coraline as a character. He wrote about her surroundings and the new things she discovers behind the door often describing every step she takes. Coraline Jones does not narrate the story but oddly enough, her thoughts and feelings are the only one’s shared throughout the story. In the book the conflict is presented when Coraline ventures through the door and soon after she is not able to escape the dimension she has entered.…

Excited for the adventure to come she crawled down the tunnel that, to her surprise, opened right into her own living room. Now though it looked like her real living room, everything was brighter and had a more welcoming atmosphere. Coraline was lured by the smell of real home cooking when she discovered her mother in the kitchen. Pullman said, “When she discovers a sinister woman there, who looks a little like her mother but has eyes that are big black buttons, the matter-of-factness of the woman's response when Coraline says "Who are you?" is both disarming and terrifying.…
