In The Man with Night Sweats, the author perhaps describes the impact of the sickness he is facing is extremely detrimental and how this is affecting his state of mind. Similarly, in Night Sweat, Robert Lowell doesn’t let the disease he’s facing control his life as he is able to connect his love for poetry with the unfortunate condition that is taking control of his life. Through the use of imagery of constant negativity in The Man with Night Sweats, Thom Gunn portrays the experience he had and how he seems to feel helpless with his body. As he’s being waken up from his terrifying dream, filled with sweat he states that “I woke up cold, I who prospered through dreams of heat”(line 1-2). These lines emphasize how this person who was sleeping peacefully and in comfort gets abruptly woken up by the saddened truth of reality. This person finds out how harsh reality can be and how this brutal life is having a catastrophic impact on this individual. The Man with Night Sweats was written by the influence of his friends and how he wrote this poem as a commemoration to the lives lost due to illnesses. As this person is traveling through a disheartening state, this person expresses his emotions in phrases such “My mind reduced to hurry, My flesh reduced and wrecked”(lines 15-16). Through the use of hyperboles the readers are able to see how this person is slowly diminishing away and how he doesn’t seem to value life the same way as before. Also this poem only resembles a person/people that are affected and there isn’t any support given to this person which might have been another reason this person has immensely shown a great dislike towards life. Another contrasting theme in this poem that differs from Night Sweat is that the lines are much shorter in The Man with Night Sweats. One possible explanation for this is that Thom Gunn used this structure of writing to signify how this person’s physical condition is impacting his speaking manner.
