I have selected to read The Little Red Riding Hood by Charles Perrault. I will be analyzing The Little Red Riding Hood through a historical lens. Charles Perrault lived in France during the 1600’s, during this time France encountered many things, such as riotings and wars. There was rioting against political leaders and many wars with different countries, mainly due how much land everyone wanted.
The story of The Little Red Riding Hood was published in 1697. The Little Red Riding Hood is a story of a young girl who is sent to visit her ill grandmother. This man is a stranger to the girl and she should not have been talking to him and giving out information. A wolf is a sly and scary creature that instilled fear in children, especially in France. France was known to have many wolf attacks, from 1200 to 1920 there were about seven thousand fatal wolf attacks. While Perrault was writing this story to keep children fearful of strangers, he was also teaching them about the dangerous wolves that they may encounter. By using a wolf as a replacement of a man, Perrault does not have to characterize a man as being dangerous, a wolf had already been seen as that not only in France but around the world.
During the time that Perrault lived in France no one could be trusted. Perrault growing up in a wealthy family was probably told to keep his distance from strangers and not give out too much information. In present day, The Little Red Riding Hood is viewed in a very similar way as it was many years ago. It is still viewed as a story to teach children to beware of strangers and not everyone is as nice as they may
